MORE PICTURES UNDER TEXT: This former ice racer is currently imported to Norway. Needs small modifications for road use, then can be put on plates and ran on the street legally.
An unique opportunity to get a real forties race car with possibilities to attend classic race meetings etc. This is an one-off custom-made racer build in 1948 nicknamed “Loorents”. It was raced on ice in the forties and then finally put on plates in 1984. It has EU documentation and can be put on numbers in any EU country quite easily. Everything works, cars is on the button. The cars history is described in the book “Svenska Bilar 1842-1997”. And a lot of receipts and documentation follows the car.
History (What we know)
Karl Loorents from Sexdrega outside Borås in Sweden is the designer behind THE LOORENTS SPECIAL. The car was built in the forties. The frame is taken from Ford Junior, the same with the rear axle and three-speed gearbox. Brakes and wheels came from a 1939 Chevrolet truck. Engine was Ford Junior side valves, later replaced by a Ford 100 E from Ford Anglia. The body is an extra fuel tank from the fighter plane Saab 29. The body is very well made and elegant. The car was initially designed as a closed coupe.
Loorents never registered his racing car, but drove several ice races with it. After a few years, the car was put behind a barn and went into oblivion. In 1960, car mechanic Ulf Björkman found the car. He bought the "wreck" for a few hundred Swedish kroner. Björkman was handy and he converted the coupé into a roadster. The car looked a lot like a Lotus Seven and was nicknamed "The Banana". The car was then painted red and got an Opel grill in the front. The 1172 cc engine was lightly tuned with a flathead and two motorcycle carburettors. In addition, the car received a tailored exhaust system without silencers. It sounded and looked like a full on Grand Prix racer. Björkman kept the car for three years and drove it on an interim licence. The car was legal to drive to start the race, test drive and for technical inspection. Then the car changed hands a couple of time and it was displayed in Borgholm Ölands Motor museum. It was registered in 1984 in Sweden for road use.
In 2020, Juha Huhtilainen in Ängelholm, bought the car and sympathetically restored it for two years. An electric fan was made for cooling, the rear fenders were made smaller and more compact. The car got a Varley Red top race battery with Cetec-charger, in addition the front axle "sliding block"" was renovated and the steering got a new “fast” rack.
We have fixed the driving position by modifying the steering and made the car more reliable by changing brackets etc. The car is now ready for use. All instruments work and the car is very much fun to drive. It has been taken thru the Norwegian Public Road Administration. First time registered in 1984. Needs small modifications to be used legally on the road.
