Driving pleasure for peanuts
In many ways, this is a forgotten sports car. I would argue that you simply won’t find a more entertaining car in this price range. The recipe is a delightful blend of driving pleasure: a willing four-cylinder engine, mid-engine layout, convertible body and excellent handling. The MG-F was overshadowed by its contemporary English cousin, the Lotus Elise. In fact, that is a little strange, because the driving experience is remarkably similar. (I have owned both.)
Both Lotus and MG use a 1.8-litre Rover K-Series petrol engine and a five-speed Rover PG1 manual gearbox. With 120 hp, it has enough power to make driving on twisty roads engaging and fun. If you have an overweight passenger in the Lotus, I reckon the two cars would be equally quick on a winding road. But the prices are worlds apart. For a quarter of the price of a Lotus Elise, you can get a well-maintained MG-F. An irresistible proposition.The MG-F also feels more solid and put together. Here, you can reach your destination without a filling coming loose from your teeth.

Replaced the coolant expansion tank with a level sensor and an audible and LED warning alarm. (This helps prevent the car from running out of coolant and suffering engine damage.)
New Tyres – 2025

The steering wheel, gear lever and seats have been recoloured and restored.
